Growing Up In A Distracted World - Parent Workshop Slides
Following on from a popular parent workshop earlier this week we are sharing the slides and associated resources for you to explore at your own pace.
The use of digital technologies at UWCSEA is foregrounded in our research on learning, but against this backdrop we see the widespread use of smartphones and devices in nearly all parts of society as being part of growing up as a teenager. The following slides provide some background context and research and then highlight the importance of self-regulation and executive functioning skills for teenagers grappling with digital technologies for the first time.
Slides towards the end of the presentation highlight a range of digital tools which may support students in tracking usage and potentially blocking distractions. The most important ones are listed separately below.

- Focus App for self control - this is available to all students but they need to use the school code to enrol for the paid version of the app. We introduce this app via all Middle School Life Skills classes.
- Rescue Time for reflection - this piece of software that tracks time spent both on applications and websites on students laptop. Each week students can an email which breaks down use and points to their 'productivity'
- Moment App for tracking smartphone use - a clever, simple and free app which tracks how many times you pick up your phone and time spent on your phone and individual apps.
- Guide to Qustodio for Parental Controls - this is seen as a last resort or where you might like to filter and track usage of the laptop. Can also be used for smart phones.

Metaari Reports Significant Up-tick In Learning Games Investment In 2018
Below is interesting data about the significant up-tick in investment in learning games -- $2.25 billion in 2018 vs. less than a billion in 2017.
PRESS RELEASE
Investment in Game-Based Learning Sharply Up in 2018: Metaari
LOS ANGELES – Jan. 7, 2019 -- Investment in game-based learning companies was sharply up in 2018, according to leading Serious Games analyst firm Metaari. A total of $2.25 billion went to 133 companies. In contrast, less than half that amount, or $948.2 million, was invested in 150 game-based learning companies in 2017.
While the number of deals declined slightly in 2018, funding levels were much higher and investment more than doubled. Almost 100 companies reported raising substantial funds; 17 PreK-12 academic-facing companies obtained funding in 2018; 21 corporate-focused companies producing game-based training were funded. The most attractive category for investors was educational games or educational technology products for use in K-12.
Chinais the education technology center of the universe, at least for now, according to Sam Adkins, Metaari. In 2018, 51 Chinese game-based learning companies garnered a combined total of $539.3 million. Nearly 50% of all ed tech investments made in 2018 went to Chinese companies.
"This is the first time in the history of the industry that China overtook the US. A stunning $7.22 billion was invested in 207 Chinese learning technology companies in 2018," Adkins said.
In July, Metaaripredicted a 37.1% CAGR growth rate for game-based learning products over the next five years. That growth would mean revenues for games-based learning will more than quadruple to well over $17 billion by 2023.
Metaari produces annual reports on the global game-based learning market. The reports, available from Serious Play Events, include an analysis of the catalysts driving the market as well as both a demand and supply-side analysis, providing publishers with the ability to choose high-yielding opportunities.

A Word About The Polish Gaming Market
Last January, I was travelling in the European east. The main purpose of this trip was to finish my post-doctorate research about "Advergames: games as marketing tools" that I developed with Paneurópska vysoká škola at Bratislava (Slovakia). I presented the results and it was great (one more trophy achieved on the academic game).
After some days in Bratislava, I travelled to Kiev (Ukraine) and then to Krakow (Poland). In the last part of this trip, in Poland, I visited one awesome gaming studio named Moonlit. Knowing that the Polish land is a great market for games, I sent some e-mails trying to contact people from the local industry to share some ideas and discover new points of view. I talked to Mateusz Wanatowicz, PR and marketing specialist in Moonlit Games. Below, I surmised our conversation, sharing highlights of the polish gaming industry, Moonlit projects and an overview of polish gaming market.
1.Why do we need to pay attention to the Polish gaming market?
Well, it's one very important market in the central Europe. According to the last Newzoo gaming research, the country (with a population of 34 million people) has profited around 500 million dollars with gaming products. In comparison to Brazil - a country with 210 million people and a profit of 1.3 billion dollars in the gaming market - it's a very interesting emergent market to pay attention to.

2. About Moonlit Games studio
Moonlit is a gaming studio and a software house. In 2018, the company started to produce two authorial projects: Playerless - an arcade game where you need to fix bugs and the NPCs to run it correctly (PC); and Ignis - a battle arena game with wizards, sorcery and combats (PC and Xbox). Below, you can check some trailers and contents from both games.

3. Some aspects of the Polish gaming industry
It is a promising industry as we saw in the first topic. According to Wanatowicz, the government of Poland sees this industry as a profitable area to invest money in and an entry door for many startups and small initiatives for new business. Wanatowicz highlighted that big events, games jams and young talents are receiving support from the government; and, another important point: careers in gaming area (coding, game designing, 3D art etc.) are also prominent in the academic area.
Another important thing to mention is the fact that the games from the series "The Witcher" were a way to present the Polish gaming industry to the whole world.
It is important to say that board games and card games have a main role in this context too. Local production of analogic games is growing year by year.
4.Polish gamers
Wanatowicz also said that Polish gamers, in a general way, support the local industry and they are proud of the national industry and gaming production.
5.A final message to the Gaming Conceptz audience
Mateusz Wanatowicz emphasizes that part of the success of a gaming industry is about how government, gamer community, studios/companies and universities can join powers to create a fertile ecosystem for different kinds of projects. Big initiatives as "The Witcher" series are fundamental, but supporting indie studios, small startups, events and clear marketing rules are also a key for a good gaming market.

ASOIAF: Rodrik Cassel 40Pt Army
![]() |
| Let's get down to business. |
Winter has come. While there are some people out there that prefer to go maneuver-heavy with Robb or face-smashy with Greatjon Umber, I like going Rodrik Cassel. The reason why is because his tactics cards are absolutely bonkers and making units Vulnerable just makes a smashy faction even smashier.
First, let's take a look at Rodrik Cassel and see what he offers to our army:
![]() |
| A true soldier. |
As you can see, Rodrik is a soldier who has an Order to make the opponent's unit Vulnerable after Attack dice are rolled. The timing for this is exceptionally important because it's what Sworn Sword Captains have as well and it's considered one of the best 1-point attachments in the game. Vulnerable is huge for someone like Rodrik because it unlocks his Tactics cards and skyrockets the damage potential of all your units. Having Vulnerable on something after you charge it would mean you re-roll all hits and your opponent has to essentially re-roll all their successful saves. It pretty much means the Stark army will obliterate units that have low saves or punch through tougher targets that can normally deflect their blows. Peeling ranks off enemy units will also keep your units around longer as the enemies' damage potential will decrease.
Let's take a look at Rodrik's tactics cards:
![]() |
| All that martial goodness! |
Martial Superiority is one of the best defensive tactics cards in the game. It triggers off when the enemy unit attacks and that dice rolls less dice AND loses all abilities until the end of the turn. Now, it isn't as powerful as some of the silences we've been before where it lasts until the end of the round, but this card doesn't need any conditionals like expending condition tokens or anything else. You cast it, boom, and most of the opponent's plans are foiled. This card is amazing at stopping something like Gregor + Flayed Men from rolling a unit while you set up for a counter-attack. To make things even more interesting, if you're going after Rodrik's unit, good luck. Having Weakened on top of this card pretty much means Rodrik's units going to stay around. Combat Prowess is a great follow-up card when used with Rodrik's unit or with any unit under the influence of Vulnerable. What if your opponent rolls poorly and you don't need to spend the Vulnerable token? Guess like he's being silenced and unable to respond with any defensive tactics cards. It's really fierce when used on the charge as there are fewer things in the game that interacts with that timing window than when a friendly unit attacks. Lastly, we have Press the Advantage. This is another one of those cards that trigger off the attack so you can't use a Sworn Sword Captain's Orders and then play this card because it escapes the window. What this card does is kick your opponents when they're already down because of the Critical Blows on an already Vulnerable target. That's why I have taken a unit of Tully Sworn Shields with Rodrik because it makes them one of the tankiest units in the game while giving them the opportunity to do bigger damage than their stats suggest.
Here's the list:
Faction: House Stark
Commander: Rodrik Cassel – Master–at–Arms
Points: 40 (4 Neutral)
Combat Units:
• Stark Sworn Swords (5)
with Sworn Sword Captain (1)
• House Umber Greataxes (7)
with Robb Stark – The Young Wolf (3)
• Grey Wind (0)
• House Tully Sworn Shields (7)
with Rodrik Cassel – Master–at–Arms (0)
• Stark Outriders (7)
with Brynden Tully – Vanguard Infiltrator (3)
Non-Combat Units:
• Sansa Stark – Little Bird (3)
• Petyr Baelish – Littlefinger (4)
Made with ASOIAFBuilder.com
Let me try and explain some of these choices super quick. The Stark Sword Swords are simply one of the best offensive units in the game for the cost. With Stark Fury and 8 dice on a 5-point unit and the ability to make someone Vulnerable, the damage potential for this unit is huge. Great Axes deal a huge amount of damage and can definitely wreck heavy cavalry if they're already engaged with them. Robb Stark as an attachment makes them regular infantry speed and gives you the ability to launch yourself out there on a Maneuver trigger on the tactics board. This makes two units that can do it in the army and that will surprise your opponents a lot! The fact that Robb (and Bran) come with their Dire Wolves is one of the best things about Starks. These free wolves not only come with great abilities, but they're a free activation and deploy to be used in battle. Grey Wind is especially good because he is able to apply Vulnerable onto a unit if already used, or apply it beforehand so it can be consumed using Rodrik's own ability or tactics cards.
I already explained a little bit about the Tully Sworn Shields above, but with Rodrik's tactics cards, this unit becomes a very jack-of-all-trades unit. It's already super defensive with Shield Wall and 3+ save, but cards like Martial Superiority just takes it over the edge. While the defensive stats normally lower damage expectations, Press the Advantage and Vulnerable tokens in general greatly increases its damage potential. As for Stark Outriders, I think they're a great, solid unit at 7 points. With Brynden Tully however, they can be one of the most annoying units in the game thanks for their great flanking ability and healing on retreat. A lot of the Stark tactics cards play incredibly well with Outriders as well thanks to their unpredictable damage potential. Just remember that with 7-point units, you can also decide to trade out the Sworn Shields for a unit of Berserkers if you want some more face-smash.

| "And yet you betrayed me.." |
As for NCUs, I really like Sansa Stark with Rodrik because of her ability to recycle or tutor for exactly what is needed right then and there. While we all try and anticipate everything that is going to happen in a game, Sansa offers us extra insurance that if an opponent rolls a 6 for a long ass charge you didn't anticipate and is rolling in with crazy Tactics cards in support, you always have a way to Martial Superiority him into the ground. For my next NCU, believe it or not, I think Littlefinger is a solid choice for the Starks. It's just comical that I'm taking both Sansa and Littlefinger in the same list, but his ability to claim Combat/Maneuver that unlocks the secondary capabilities for your Stark tactics cards while still reaping the benefit of other unclaimed zones is amazing.
Try out the list and let me know how you fair!
15 Christmas Dangers Every Pet Owner Should Be Aware Of

Over 780% more cases of chocolate poisoning in pets are caused over Christmas in the UK, according to Vets Now pet emergency services. Even though most pet owners are aware of the toxicity of chocolate along with other foods like nuts, onions, and fatty foods, it is found that most dogs have still experienced a bout food poisoning during the holiday season. Just a few squares of dark chocolate can risk an average dog's life.

Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence (Oshima, 1983)
"I always look for characters that have either an emotional or physical limp"

- David Bowie
..........................................................................................
I originally wrote a large part of the following blog for publication in David Bowie Glamour, a fanzine put together by Nick Smart - @QuietSeclusion and Andy Jones - @DavidBowieGlam with artwork and design by Helen Green - @Helengreeen and @LoveMilkyCereal which can be purchased here: https://davidbowieglamour.wordpress.com .
I've decided to post it here but to also expand on the piece included in the magazine with a few further thoughts, as I was originally working with a small word limit and there is more that I'd like to say about this thoughtful film.
..........................................................................................I've decided to post it here but to also expand on the piece included in the magazine with a few further thoughts, as I was originally working with a small word limit and there is more that I'd like to say about this thoughtful film.
When I first heard the news on the morning of January 11th - three things about David Bowie immediately raced through my mind. The first was obvious - Blackstar, the album we had all been listening to the night before. The second was a rush of songs of his that I had always admired - Word On A Wing, Everyone Says Hi, Teenage Wildlife, Letter to Hermione…. The third was this film, because it had long held a special place in the back of my mind. We'll always see our hero as a singer first, but I think this unusual picture captured maybe better than any other, his gift for acting.
"I didn't find a crazy rock star, I found a very hard working man serious about his work" - Tom Conti on David Bowie
Even though the perception of Bowie is as someone who was always one step ahead of absolutely everyone, looking to the future - in this he plays someone who is shaped by, and motivated by everything that has happened in his past.
Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence (Dir. Nagisa Oshima, 1983) focusses on a Japanese prisoner of war camp located on the island of Java in 1942; the titular main character, John Lawrence (Tom Conti) is a compassionate and resourceful British officer that speaks fluent Japanese, and who spends much of the film trying to maintain any sense of order he can between the Japanese and their western prisoners despite their polar opposite cultural views. Lawrence's relationship with Japanese guard Sergeant Hara (Takeshi Kaitano) is the first of the two main relationships that drive the picture, the second is that of Major Jack 'Strafer' Celliers (David Bowie), a new prisoner who disrupts the order of the camp and Captain Yanoi (Ryuichi Sakamoto), who takes an immediate fascination and attraction to the new arrival.
Nagisa Oshima hired David Bowie for the film after seeing him in the stage production of The Elephant Man (Bowie himself agreed to take on the role based on nothing but his respect for Oshima's past work). On the surface, it's difficult to see why such a role would give Oshima a brain wave. Captain Celliers couldn't be any more different. He is confident and admired leader (a "soldiers soldier") and defiant against the way the camp is ruled. In so doing he represents a challenge to the Japanese guards, who are not used to rebellion or what they would consider, bravery. Whilst the western prisoners see the Japanese as unrelentingly and despicably cruel, the Japanese see their enemy as cowardly and undeserving of mercy - they themselves are driven by an extreme moral code that sees any form of cowardice worthy of punishment and utmost shame.
At least, that's was we're led to believe. But in reality Celiers is just as damaged as John Merrick - he's an emotionally and psychologically broken man who is forced to bottle up his traumatic past. His stoicism is what fascinates Yanoi, but what makes Bowie's performance so memorable is that he creates a character with a surefooted facade that is in reality so removed from the private anguish that he battles with.
In a rare moment of vulnerability, Celliers reveals in flashback what befell him before joining the army. Withdrawn and ashamed, he explains how he failed to intervene when a group of schoolchildren were tormenting his younger brother in a brutal initiation ceremony at the boarding school they both attended. A gifted singer with an angelic voice, Celliers' brothers' spirit is absolutely crushed, and he never sings again.
"Over the years, I became, you might say… a haunted person. I really wanted to see him again. I never did. I was an eligible bachelor… a reasonably successful lawyer…and absolutely nothing" - Jack Celliers
Everything that Celliers does in his life after this is an attempt to compensate for these actions - he "embraced" the outbreak of war because it was something that offered a chance for redemption. He sneaks food into the camp, saves Lawrence from torture, and attempts to raise morale in the infirmary by leading a sing-along (quite humorously, he has to pretend he's no good at singing in this scene... and I ain't buying that). But the moment when he sees a chance for his true act of atonement comes at the end of the film, after Yanoi orders all prisoners to stand before him.
Oshima creates a great sense of foreboding in this scene. No-one knows what is about to take place. The Japanese surround the POW's, set up machine gun turrets and hold their rifles up ready for use. Lawrence assures Celliers that it's all "fairly routine stuff", but Jack seems lost in some sort of trance. He stares forlornly into space and says "listen John… I wish I could sing" - I think at this moment he hears his brothers voice in his head, so when a fellow prisoner is dragged to the feet of Yanoi to be executed, Jack is filled with sense of duty - to this time sacrifice himself in sake of another rather than standing to one side. Paul Mayersberg, the screenwriter said that he tried to make "as many mirrors of characters" as he could, and that "by having scenes that mirror each other you also cast reflections on the characters". No doubt this moment is a direct parallel with Celliers' time in boarding school.
In one of Bowie's most famous on-screen moments, he breaks rank and stands between Yanoi and the POW, grabs the prison commander by the shoulders and kisses him on the cheeks. The besotted Yanoi is beset with shame - but as he goes to kill Celliers he instead faints into the arms of the soldiers behind him. Celliers pays the ultimate price for his sacrifice and is buried up to his neck in the sand as punishment. It is in his dying dream where he finally gets to see his brother and reconcile with him, saying how much he "wronged him". As a mark of respect, fellow prisoners sing to Celliers from their barracks, a funeral song that the inmates had previously sung earlier in the film for a deceased prisoner.
Bowie stated that, with this film Oshima gave him one of the most fulfilling experiences in either his musical or acting career. I do think this stands as one of his best performances, and it's definitely my favourite film that he ever appeared in. The fact that he really is a musician before anything else says alot to how much I admired this film before his passing, because as stated, this is one of the first things that I thought about when I heard the terrible news.
Because of the star power in Bowie, it's easy to overlook the other main character, but that shouldn't be the case because Lawrence really is the heart of the film. Bowie described Tom Conti as someone with "a wonderful analytical mind about how characters work and interact with each other", which too acts as a good description of the character Conti is playing. Lawrence is the only one who attempts to truly understand why the Japanese are the way they are, being the only prisoner who is fluent in both languages he is the one bridge between the two sides. In fact at one point, fellow prisoner Captain Hicksley (Jack Thompson) says that he spends more time with the Japs than he does with his own men. He looses his temper a few times, but ultimately is incredibly level headed in an environment that would drive anyone to madness. Impressively, he knew no Japanese at all before being given the role in the film, and had to learn all of his lines phonetically - he was so convincing that the Japanese attending the screening of the film in Cannes had no idea of this and assumed Conti was fluent in the language.
The suffering that Lawrence suffers at the hands of the Japanese helps audiences to better understand the barbarity of his captors - at one point he is sentenced to death because of a radio that is found in the prison barracks. Even though it wasn't him who brought it in, Yanoi would rather punish the wrong person rather than no-one at all, to "preserve his sense of order". He too helps the other, non-Japanese characters understand the motivations of them, for example when the prisoners are forced to fast in order to cure their 'spiritual laziness', Lawrence explains to his fellow, confused friends that the Japanese believe taking away the food and the water will take away the nourishment for this spiritual laziness. Despite not believing in their code of honour and understandably finding it vulgar at times, Lawrence is still knowledgeable the culture of the Japanese - even if the cruelty itself is inconceivable, he acknowledges that their code of honour dictates how they must act ("You are the victim of men who think that they are right").
Unlike Captain Hicksley, Lawrence harbours, deep down, a kind of respect for his enemy - which is best seen in the ending. By the end of the picture and the end of the war, the roles of Lawrence and Hara have switched. Lawrence is free and Hara is being held in prison before execution for his war crimes, Hara has even learnt English and despite one of them being imprisoned, they finally talk as equals. It's here that it's made very clear that, had it not been for the war, these two could have been very dear friends. They reminisce about their time together and Lawrence is barely able to keep it together as he says that if it were up to him, he'd release Hara straight away to go back to his family.
Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence is based on the book The Seed and the Sower, a semi autobiographical novel written by Laurens Van Der Post. In an interview about the film, he was asked about what he hoped people who hadn't had to fight in the war would gain from watching this film adaptation:
"As important as justice is understanding, compassion, mercy and forgiveness. A deeper understanding is necessary if we're going to have a brotherhood of man" - Laurens Van Der Post
Indeed, by the end of the film, the two main Japanese characters have changed. Yanoi is unable to repress his love for Celliers and cuts off a lock of his hair whilst he's buried, saluting the Major before giving the hair to Hara to take to a village in Japan. Hara, meanwhile, who showed glimpses of humanity while in the camp is utterly sympathetic in the last scene. "There are times, when victory is very hard to take", says Lawrence before leaving one last time - this is the moment that best captures Laurens Van Der Post's quote. The two have forgiven each other, and for the first time their cultures are not anymore a barrier:
